The Security Bureau said yesterday that its plan to install security cameras in Lan Kwai Fong had not been shelved, after it revealed it was not seeking immediate funding for the project.

Legco's security panel last week unanimously passed a motion recommending that the plan to install nine surveillance cameras in the nightclub district in August be called off. Members said it would infringe privacy.

Democrat Albert Ho Chun-yan had issued a notice to the legislature saying he would amend tomorrow's Appropriation Bill for the Budget to scrap the $2.9 billion cost of the installation plus $590,000 for launching the project.

But yesterday he said he had withdrawn the amendment because he was told by the Government that the funding was not included in the bill.

'I hope the Government is considering scrapping the plan,' he said.

A spokeswoman for the Security Bureau denied that the Government had shelved the plan, saying it had never been included in funding for the police budget this year.
