Treasure life, advise anti-suicide T-shirts

Thousands of T-shirts with the message 'Treasure life' have gone on sale at Giordano shops in a joint effort with the Samaritans to halt the rising number of suicide cases.

The $30 shirts, which come in five colours with the word 'life' printed in large type, went on sale at about a dozen Giordano stores across the territory yesterday.

Proceeds from sales of the 8,000 shirts will go to the Samaritans after production costs are deducted.

A sales representative at a Giordano shop in Taikoo Shing said the shirts were the idea of company chairman Peter Lau Kwok-kuen and had been triggered by the recent spate of suicide and murder-suicide cases.

Customer Edmond Chow bought a yellow T-shirt in the Taikoo Shing branch yesterday, saying he did so 'for fun' as well as to do a 'good deed'.

'It's quite meaningful, although it may not help a lot to combat the trend,' he said.

The initiative follows four tragedies this month in which parents killed their children and themselves. The latest was on April 21, when a mother killed herself and her two young children by burning charcoal in their home.
