Chan Lai-yin, 23, jabbed Sergeant Chan Siu-kai of Island Emergency Unit in his left forearm, but was subdued by him after a brief confrontation in the ground-floor emergency ward.

The woman had struggled free from her doctor and two policemen on the sixth floor, threatened to stab herself and warded off patients with the syringe on her way downstairs.

Panicked nurses thought the woman had snatched the sergeant's gun and Emergency Unit officers were mobilised before the mistake was discovered.

Sergeant Chan was treated and discharged.
