Men spoilt for choice as number of women rises

Women will find themselves increasingly outnumbering men in Hong Kong, with the ratio of males to females expected to drop steadily until 2031.

According to the latest population forecasts, the number of men per 1,000 women is projected to fall from 956 in 2001 to 771.

Excluding female foreign domestic helpers, the number of men per thousand women will drop from 1,021 to 836.

In terms of the total number of men and women, last year, of the total 6.72 million population, 3,287,000 were males and 3,437,900 females.

The Census and Statistics Department said yesterday it expected that by 2031 there would be 3,796,000 males and 4,925,500 females in Hong Kong.

The situation is more extreme when the pool is narrowed down to those aged 20 to 39.

For men, the population in this category will plunge from the current 1.43 million to only 935,900. However, the number of women in that age group will rise from 1.22 million to 1.28 million.
