A handbag thief who hid in an MTR tunnel for more than eight hours to evade police was warned he faced a possible jail term after being convicted yesterday.
Print worker Wong Sing-on, 25, admitted theft and resisting arrest. He is due to be sentenced in two weeks.
Eastern Court heard that the defendant snatched Wong Hau-kam's Prada handbag on April 5 as she walked with her friend in the Provident Centre in Wharf Road, North Point.
When Ms Wong rang her mobile phone, which was inside her bag, Wong answered and she asked for her belongings to be returned. Wong told her she would have to pay him $2,000, the court heard.
Wong then organised a drop-off, in which he would leave Ms Wong's belongings in one rubbish bin, and she would leave the cash in another.
Unknown to the defendant, Ms Wong had alerted police, who tried to intercept Wong at the collection point.
