Would any of the several government departments responsible for co-ordinating the discussions with Yi O villagers on Lantau, please tell us, through these columns, what progress has been made regarding the status of the highly popular stage 7 of the Lantau Trail?
I believe that it is over a year since the fact that the path has been blockaded by local inhabitants was reported and from then until now, despite phone calls and letters, numerous meetings, media attention and even police intervention, there seems to have been no resolution to the current unsatisfactory 'off-limits' situation.
This issue raises far wider implications concerning the public's access to footpaths and trails throughout Hong Kong.
South Lantau, with its towering mountains, pristine beaches and natural beauty, offers an essential, and highly valued, resource to the people of Hong Kong, and its visitors. Therefore, I hope the Lantau Trail, in its entirety, will soon be accessible again for the enjoyment of all.
