More than 4,500 Beijing party members have been disciplined for graft-related violations over the past five years, a party official said.
Cheng Shie, the party secretary of the city's disciplinary inspection committee, said in a meeting on Friday that 4,532 party members in Beijing had been disciplined for corruption-related offences which had cost the city more than 510 million yuan (HK$479 million), the semi-official China News Service reported.
The disciplined officials included 738 departmental-level cadres and 33 bureau-level officials, Mr Cheng said.
During the same period, the committee had investigated 4,373 cases, the majority involving bribes and illegal use of government funds, he said.
He admitted that there were still plenty of other higher-level corruption cases that had not been resolved and that the rampant graft in the city was having a serious impact on its reforms and development policy.
The most notorious case of official corruption in Beijing resulted in the 1998 conviction of former Beijing party secretary Chen Xitong, who was imprisoned for 16 years for embezzling 18 billion yuan (HK$17.16 billion) between 1987 and 1995.
