A high-profile overseas returnee recruited last year by the Shenzhen Government has resigned from his post at a national research centre, citing deception, differences in value systems and difficulties with his colleagues as reasons for his departure.
Dr Zhang Xu confirmed last week that he had resigned from the post of research and development manager at the Shenzhen National Biotechnology Development Centre at the end of last month.
'I have lost trust in the centre,' Dr Zhang said. 'I came back with enthusiasm and the belief that I would start a promising career here. But now it has all ended.'
Dr Zhang, who previously worked in San Diego, California, attended a job fair organised by the Shenzhen Government to attract overseas talent in April last year, beating more than 100 applicants for the position at the National Biotechnology Development Centre.
Dr Zhang was among a dozen overseas returnees to be given a bonus of 100,000 yuan (HK$94,000) by the Shenzhen Government to develop genetic technology for treating ageing and conducting organ transplants.
But problems started to arise one month after he settled into the centre and wanted to recruit an assistant.
