Four male volunteers have been chosen to take part in China's first male-pregnancy project, according to a newspaper report.

The Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po reported yesterday the four were chosen from about 200 applicants, citing Dr Chen Huanran, of the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

The report said the project was still being reviewed and admitted it would face 'strong resistance from all quarters of society'.

Dr Chen works at a centre under the academy specialising in sex-change operations.

He was quoted as saying embryos would be inserted in the men's abdomens and they would also have injections of female hormones. He did not reveal the source of the embryos.

The project was launched last November when Dr Chen began to advertise on the Internet for volunteers. The recruitment asked for men 'who have a strong yearning for children with their own genetic make-up' and 'men with an adventurous spirit and the commitment to devote themselves to a scientific experiment'.
