AFTER YEARS OF recession, Japanese consumers have been forced to buy cheaper products, leading to a boost in Hong Kong's apparel exports to the world's second-largest economy.
Hong Kong's apparel exports to Japan, including exports and reexports, increased an average of 13 per cent annually over the past three years, according to a report released by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC).
Japan's apparel imports totalled US$18 billion last year.
China is the largest source of apparel exports to Japan, accounting for 78 per cent of the total.
Of that 78 per cent, Hong Kong's exports accounted for 10 per cent.
The Japanese are known around the world for their expensive tastes, usually buying quality locally made products or European imports from high-end department stores.
