An obsessed fan threatened to kill himself with a paper-cutter yesterday unless he was allowed to meet his idol, pop singer Kelly Chan Wai-lam.

During a three-hour standoff with police at her record company's offices in Tsim Sha Tsui, the 20-year-old, from Sichuan, demanded to talk to the popular singer-actress.

He had arrived at the eighth-floor Go East Entertainment Company in Canton Road at about 10.30am and demanded to meet her.

He pulled out the cutter and pointed it to his neck, threatening to hurt himself, according to the company's senior promotions manager, Rowena Chan.

The singer was not in the office but there were more than 10 employees working inside. Staff called police when the man refused to drop his weapon. Police evacuated the office and called in a negotiator. 'Shortly before 1.30pm, the man followed the police's suggestion and wrote down what he wanted to say to Kelly and then dropped his weapon,' Ms Chan said.
