A Ma On Shan couple yesterday claimed they moved out of their home to escape being part of the captive audience for bus TV.

Businessman Luk Ka-yu, 55, said he and partner Harriet Lau, 40, used to enjoy the clean air and green views of the area.

But when their twice-daily bus trip became too much to bear in October, the couple moved to Tsim Sha Tsui so they could take the MTR to work.

Before bus TV, they would nap during the trip between Ma On Shan and Diamond Hill MTR station, a journey of up to 45 minutes.

When their peace started to be interrupted by commercials, they complained to bus companies and the Transport Department.

'Their replies are all lies and nonsense,' Mr Luk said.

'They are talking about education and information.

'They give you none of these.

'Anyway, I don't need education when going to work.

'I need peace of mind.'

Mr Luk said he drove his car to work for a while but found the cost of $200 each day impractical.

He described the imposition of bus TV as 'ruthless, heartless'.

He suggested that bus TV be installed in the limousines of bus company executives and Government officials.

'They don't know how the people suffer,' he said.

The chairwoman of lobby group Hush the Bus, Catherine Ng, said some commuters had resorted to wearing industrial earmuffs to avoid bus broadcasts.

Others had bought cars or dusted off their bicycles.

'When bus passengers have to resort to moving house in order to avoid being harassed by unsolicited audio-and-visuals on franchised buses, Hong Kong cannot claim to be a world-class city,' Ms Ng said.
