MORE than 100 Tuen Mun residents took part in a slow drive on Tuen Mun Highway yesterday in protest at the growing traffic congestion on the road. They set off on the two-hour procession from Tuen Mun Town Hall, then boarded coaches for a slow drive to Siu Lam. As the protesters were marching toward the highway, they were ordered by police to change their route for fear of blocking Tuen Mun town centre. Protest organiser Yim Tin-sang, a district board and Regional Council member, said the highway had reached its capacity and immediate action was needed to improve traffic links between the new town and urban areas. Mr Yim said residents were dissatisfied with an earlier government proposal to widen a section of the highway by 1997, saying it would take too long.
