Airliner hijack bid foiled

A MAN who carried some explosive material and said he planned to hijack an airliner to Taiwan on Friday has been detained by police in the central city of Nanjing, the Hongkong China News Agency said yesterday.

The man, identified as Hu Xiao, was stopped by security staff at the airport when he was in a queue to board a Fujian-bound flight.

Four bottles of petrol and some explosives were found in his luggage. A note saying ''Destination: Taiwan'' was also found.

Hu later admitted that he planned to hijack the plane to Taiwan.
