The one extra every cycling geek needs is a bike computer. It won't let you surf the net while you ride, but it will give speed, distance travelled, time of day and other information. The problem with some of these little wonders is their installation, which involves running wires from a sensor on the front forks, placed opposite a small magnet clipped to a spoke, to the computer mounted on the handlebars.

A better approach is to buy a Cateye Cordless 2 computer. Signals are transmitted wirelessly to the computer from a sensor on the forks. The Cordless 2 also boasts an automatic start/stop feature that triggers a stopwatch whenever your bike rolls or stands still, thereby providing your pedalling time and average speed. The Cateye Cordless 2 costs $430 from Bicycle World, Shop 2, G/F, Connaught Commercial Building, 185 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai; tel: 2892-2299.
