I REFER to the report regarding the comments made by the new Chairman of the Football Association, Stewart Lee Leung-nang, concerning rentals at the Hongkong Stadium (South China Morning Post, July 19). I can only agree that it appears that all local sporting events will be priced out of using this venue. At last we have a superb sports stadium, purpose-built for the Hongkong people. But what will it be used for? Agreed, canto pop concerts will bring in revenue (though the thought of thousands of young fans dancing and leaping about on those steep top tiers is terrifying) and agreed, big spectacular events may help make it a viable economic proposition for Wembley Stadium and the Urban Council. But please do not lose sight of its original purpose. I wonder if any of the sporting clubs and associations were consulted as to the fees they would be able to afford prior to the setting of these rates? Were any representatives from the local sporting fraternity who have the expertise and knowledge of local sport approached for their advice? From the rates being proposed quite obviously not. I know of no sports body in Hongkong, except possibly the HKRFU at Sevens time, that could even think about raising such sums. One of the most important things to do is to regenerate the interest in local sport. We have some talented young sportsmen and women in Hongkong and they should be accorded the opportunity to use this superb venue. Just for once in Hongkong can we not let the development of sport and leisure, and all the ideals it stands for, come before the mighty dollar? Maybe the sponsors of this beautiful stadium, the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club could take the lead and ask for these ludicrous charges to be revised. If charges are not reduced to sensible levels, may I suggest that if you live in the vicinity start thinking about moving now - unless of course you like the idea of pop concerts blaring through your windows twice a week.
