A dig into the photo archives has revealed it isn't just a case of guys following England captain David Beckham's hairstyle - it's also a case of Becks nicking our very own Andy Lau Tak-wah's do.
Lau's most recent cut is a direct copy of Beckham's shaggy blond mohican, a style springing up all over Hong Kong and among the crowds of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
But in 1994, before the midfielder broke into the Manchester United first team, it seems Becks sported a gelled centre-parting creation, a style Lau had way back in 1989. A year later, Beckham's locks are shorter, a la Lau circa 2000. OK, so Lau's back to copying Becks on this one, as he did in late 1990s, when Beckham streaked his floppy fringe blond. Cue a bleached Lau.
Lau's assistant, Chan Ka-li, said Lau went for the Beckham mohican look because he wanted a shorter style. 'Andy says he hasn't had short hair for a long time and because of the World Cup and being an England fan, he chose this hairstyle.'
Beckham summoned his hairstylist to Japan earlier this week, sparking speculation the mohican's days were numbered. So would Lau follow suit? Chan said all she knew was Lau would shave his head if England lost to Brazil tomorrow - in homage to a raft of bald Brazilian players including Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, and, incidentally, Beckham's previous style and one Lau had in 1984 when he was shorn for the series The Duke Of Mount Deer. Hang on, this could go on forever.
