FOLLOWING pressure from estate agents for a licensing system, the Government is considering introducing a legal framework for the agents. Canice Mak, Deputy Secretary for Planning, Environment and Lands, said at a seminar on licensing of agents that the Government did not have a firm view but was consulting interested parties to outline a possible regulatory system. ''We need to steer a careful course and should not confuse the need to ensure an acceptable standard of competence with pushing for increased professionalism just for its own sake,'' he said. The Hongkong Real Estate Agencies Association has been urging the government to introduce strict licensing laws for estate agents in the territory, to ensure quality standards in the industry. The association set up a taskforce to this effect this month. The Government wants to take the views of the public into account as well as the people in the trade. and wants to ensure that any licensing system is suited to Hongkong circumstances.
