A mother jailed for living illegally in Hong Kong for 20 years wept yesterday as she was told her seven-year-old twin sons were sitting outside the prison writing letters to her.

The boys, who have not been told their parents are in jail and believe they are working in Beijing, wrote their letters outside Tai Lam Centre for Women while their 18-year-old sister, Maria, was visiting their mother inside.

The plight of the twins has attracted widespread sympathy since their parents were jailed. Yesterday, they were left with a carer outside a clinic in Tai Lam by their sister, who told them she had a dental appointment.

In the letter they wrote to their mother they said: 'Mum, how are you? We miss our mummy very much. We have been playing with toys our sister bought us.'

They wrote a similar letter to their father, whom Maria also visited at Pik Uk Correctional Institution yesterday.

Maria said she had to take her brothers with her yesterday as otherwise they would be left home alone. 'My mum cried after I told her that the boys were outside. She's very worried about them,' she said.

Maria said she did not want to worry her brothers by telling them the truth.
