I refer to the letter by Edward Huang headlined 'Use of signs on a downward slope' (South China Morning Post, June 5).
Mr Huang was concerned about slope registration signs and I would like to explain the main functions of these signs.
The registration sign is erected to facilitate the public in identifying a particular slope when relaying their concerns to the relevant government department. It also helps the department pinpoint the exact location of the slope for prompt follow-up actions, especially in times of emergency such as in landslide situations. Each slope sign contains the slope number, and the name and phone number of the maintenance department.
We are mindful of the need to improve the appearance of some existing slope signs so they blend in with their surroundings and this minimises their visual impact.
Therefore, we have introduced measures to progressively remove or replace some existing signs, especially those erected at visually sensitive locations.
