If local tourism authorities have their way, the tourist itinerary may soon include a lot more than a visit to the Peak and a cross-harbour trip on the Star Ferry.

A marketing scheme to give away 750 tickets to a fashion show next month featuring some of Hong Kong's biggest names in design has met with overwhelming success.

Designs by the likes of Henry Lau, Barney Cheng, Lu Lu Cheng, Walter Ma, William Tang, Dorian Ho, Cecilia Yau, Benny Yeung and Bonita Cheung will feature in the evening fashion show, 'Best of Hong Kong Designer Fashion', which is sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB).

The July 10 event, scheduled to coincide with the Hong Kong fashion week, marks a turning point in the HKTB's strategy towards emphasising the city as a shopping and fashion mecca.

Donna Mongan, public relations manager with the HKTB, says the fashion show is part of a broader fashion and beauty shopping theme. 'We see Hong Kong fashions as much sought after by shoppers around the world,' Ms Mongan says.

'The designers appearing in the show are well known, not just in the region but in the United States, Britain and Australia. We want to make sure visitors not only see the latest designs Hong Kong can produce but actually go out there after seeing them and purchase these designs.'

This is the first time the HKTB has sponsored a tourist-oriented fashion show.
