I refer to the letter headlined 'Language barrier' (South China Morning Post, June 17), complaining about the English proficiency of police officers on Lamma.

In the course of its work the United Migrant Workers Interim Trust has dealt with many branches of government, and these have included, indeed currently include, the Lamma police. We do not agree with the views of your correspondent and feel it is only right we should put in a good word for the target of the complaints.
The language we use in dealing with government departments is English.
