Hong Kong's most expensive kindergartens are charging more in annual fees than it costs to study for a university degree, according to a report released yesterday.
It costs $107,340 a year at the territory's most expensive kindergarten, Yew Chung International School at Kowloon Tong.
This compares to just $30,000 for a part-time Master of Politics degree at Hong Kong University or $42,000 for a full-time undergraduate journalism degree at Chinese University.
The Profile of Kindergartens for the 2001/02 school year published by the Committee on Home-School Co-operation and the Education Department shows that Yew Chung charges the most for full-day tuition, followed by $93,600 for the Montessori School in Caine Road.
The highest charge for half-day teaching is $73,200 at the Kingston International Kindergarten in Kowloon Tong.
Tuen Mun had the cheapest institution, with St Simon's Leung King Kindergarten costing $935, followed by Shamshuipo's Faith Lutheran Church Kindergarten which charges $1,114. Both are half-day.
