Hundreds of Organised Crime and Triad Bureau officers last night swooped on Yuen Long in a bid to cut the revenue sources of the 14K and Wo Sing Wo triad gangs.
Residents said at least 200 uniformed and plain-clothes officers were despatched to areas where triad gangs are known to carry out illegal activities and to establishments which are under their protection.
The overnight operation was launched after a lengthy investigation into the operations and income sources of the two gangs.
Bureau officers were last night being assisted by colleagues from the Uniformed Branch, Regional Crime Units and officers from the Police Tactical Unit.
Mini-bus terminals, game centres, restaurants and nightspots believed to have triad links were being raided, a police source said. The source said police expected to round up scores of suspected triad members.
Earlier, bureau officers assisted by Customs officers arrested 19 people in an operation to combat illegal fuel stations linked to triads in Yuen Long.
