The Porsche 911, now in its fifth-generation guise with a potent 3.6-litre, flat-six, water-cooled engine, was almost axed in 1977 when the grand touring 928 was introduced with a 4.5-litre V8 power unit. The 928 continued in production until 1995. The 911, first launched in 1963, is still with us.
