No vroom in the broom broom

It's Bentley Night and the Grand Hyatt ballroom is decked to the nines. A projected image of a V8-powered Bentley car circles the room.

The speakers roar: 'Broom broom.'

Assembled tycoons and bejewelled tai tais let out a collective: 'Aaaah.'

But all is not right at table five. SCMP motoring editor, William Wadsworth, sets down his champagne. 'That's not the engine sound of a V8 Bentley engine,' he says. 'Not smooth enough.'

An e-mail to Bentley got to the truth of the matter. Jennifer Hui of Ad Region, who organised the night, said he was absolutely right. 'The broom broom sound was a studio effect, not a real V8,' she said.
