Police commercial crime detectives have been urged to investigate an alleged $70 million in missing wages owed to subcontractors for government drainage projects.
Democratic Party legislator Albert Chan Wai-yip yesterday led 12 subcontractor representatives to meet officials of the Drainage Services Department (DSD) over the money they say is owed to them by Wing Fai Construction Company.
In the meeting, the department said Wing Fai had been paid 'on time' up to $300 million for two contracts since 1998.
But payment was suspended last month after the company failed to complete the projects - together worth $460 million - in Yuen Long and West Kowloon satisfactorily, according to the department.
Wing Fai told the subcontractors yesterday that it never received payment from the department and alleged the money was pocketed by another party.
Mr Chan said after the meeting that he would file a complaint to the Commercial Crime Bureau after he finished registering the subcontractors' alleged losses.
There were about 50 subcontractors involved, with 'hundreds of workers' under them being affected.
