WHILE THE TITLE of the event may have been slightly misleading - 'Drumming For Diamonds In Africa' made it sound as if there would be diamonds to view - the evening hosted by financial advisor Ann Cooley didn't disappoint. The real impetus behind the evening of drums and food was a talk about investing in African gold and diamonds.
Charity maven Alice Chiu Tsang Hok-wan, plus the gaggle of ladies who turned up at the Grand Hyatt's Chief Executive Suite, were delighted the party was an interactive affair. African drummer Mamadou M'Baye and a few of his friends brought 40 djembes from his shop on Lamma Island and not only tutored them in drumming but gave African dancing lessons too. With Chiu leading the pack, along with Orient Colour's Alice So, guests got down and dirty on stage and danced to some seriously funky beats - played by the rest of the ladies on their drums.
After Cooley gave her talk, she brought out a trademark cigar and puffed on it happily for the rest of the evening.
