If you are working for non-mainland media it is often difficult to cover a sudden event. Red tape and getting permission from various authorities can slow the process, as was shown with attempts to interview the Anjia factory women and other workers.

We were stopped at the entrance of the Guangdong Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment Hospital, where the women were staying. When we made it clear we were from a Hong Kong newspaper, we were told we needed to apply to the provincial health authorities.

After a game of cat and mouse with guards, doctors and the in-patient director, I was eventually able to conduct the interview.

Afterwards, the smile of an official from the Guangdong Women's Federation faded after she learned we were non-mainland media. She requested us to 'focus on the positive side, to show the care to the workers displayed by the government', or not to report on the situation at all.
