It takes a while to get used to seeing Harrison Ford playing a Russian. This is, after all, a man who made his name playing some of the greatest all-American heroes in cinema history (Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan in The Fugitive, Han Solo in Star Wars). But once you get used to the novelty (and the accent), you can enjoy Ford at his steel-jawed, serious best in K-19.
Director Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days) takes on the true story of the ill-fated Soviet nuclear submarine, K-19, and does a serviceable job. OK, it never quite achieves the claustrophobia of the great sweaty-browed submarine thrillers (such as Das Boot), but the power of Ford's performance - and that of co-star Liam Neeson - make it an enjoyable ride.
