Mr Pressler yesterday refused to confirm whether Disney had given the government a verbal pledge it would not invest in another theme park in China within a certain period.

Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said last September that he had been given an assurance that Disney would let the Hong Kong park be 'mature and up and running before thinking about another'. However, Mr Pressler, deflected all questions on the issue. 'We are considering having a second theme park in mainland China . . . that's what I can say right now,' he said, adding that Walt Disney was committed to making Hong Kong Disneyland a success.

The pledge to Mr Tsang was reported to have been made during Disney chairman Michael Eisner's visit to Hong Kong last year.

The government has since refused to comment.
