I am a passionate art lover and Madrid's wonderful art museums have lured me back again and again. Phuket

When my batteries are low, I fly to Phuket for a revitalising weekend. The island has all I need - warming sun and sandy beaches. I do nothing - simply turn off my mobile phone and enjoy a nice novel by the water. The Banyan Tree resort (tel: [66] 76 324374; www.phuket.com/banyantree) has excellent spa and aromatherapy treatments and the suites are equipped with individudal swimming pools.

Paris

Paris is the place to be for retail therapy. I still treasure the vintage garments I've found at the Sunday flea market at Porte de Clignancourt in the 18th arrondissement. It's the largest of all Parisian flea markets with more than 3,000 stalls.
