Fixed-line telecommunications operator Hutchison Global Crossing is to change its name to Hutchison Global Communications.

The change comes after parent Hutchison Whampoa assumed sole ownership of the company in April, buying out former joint-venture partner Asia Global Crossing, a subsidiary of bankrupt US undersea cable operator Global Crossing.

A company spokesman said the new name would be adopted as soon as possible. While the short-form of the company would remain the same, its logo would be redesigned.

The new name reflects controlling shareholder Li Ka-shing's global telecom ambitions, although Hutchison Global Crossing has remained predominantly a local operation in the past 2.5 years.

In November 1999, Global Crossing agreed to buy a 50 per cent stake in the Hutchison's fixed-line network for US$800 million, mainly in convertible notes and capacity rights.

But the once high-flying global telecom firm was unable to meet its US$12 billion debt obligations, and had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection - the fourth largest filing in United States history - in January.
