Financial Secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung confirmed last night that he married Olympic diving star Fu Mingxia a fortnight ago in Hawaii.
In a personal statement issued to the media at around 8.45pm, Mr Leung, 50, said: 'In response to media enquiries, I am delighted to confirm I have married Miss Fu Mingxia. Our wedding was held on July 15 in Honolulu.
'I am thankful for the interest expressed in our marriage by our friends - including the mass media. However, we would like to handle it in a low-profile way as it is basically a personal matter.'
There have been reports since Sunday that Mr Leung and the 23-year-old mainlander had married recently in the United States.
Mr Leung told his fellow ministers of his marriage at the weekend when they attended a retreat at the Gold Coast Hotel in Tuen Mun, sources at the meetings said.
A large group of reporters gathered outside Mr Leung's official residence in Shouson Hill Road last night, hoping to interview or catch a glimpse of the newlyweds. It is not known whether Ms Fu is in Hong Kong.
