Adopt A Beach

Why you can trust SCMP
When geologist Clarke Abel arrived on Hong Kong shores 200 years ago, he spotted Waterfall Bay in Pokfulam and wrote: 'A supply of the purest water is seen falling from the cliffs of two summits in a series of cascades, the last of which glides in one grand, graceful lapse into a rocky basin on the beach.' Now, that very beach has turned into what resembles a rubbish dump. At low tide the beach is littered with marine debris and the walls of the cove are covered in graffiti. Tobias Forster of Civic Exchange believes 'the way in which we care for our natural and historical heritage today will determine what kind of city we create for the future'. He hopes we can reverse the process right now. The Adopt-A-Beach programme aims to do just that. Monthly clean-ups are being organised to reduce rubbish levels and restore the beach to its former glory.
