A team of Hong Kong students has beaten some of the world's top maths minds to win five medals - a gold, two silvers and two bronzes - at the 43rd International Mathematical Olympiad in Glasgow, Scotland.
The team was led by Dr Li Kin-yin, of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It was the first gold for Hong Kong, which has been entering secondary school teams since 1988.
The six-member group trained three days a week for up to four hours at a time before joining 84 other teams in completing six questions in nine hours spread over two days.
Gold medallist Yu Hok-pun, 18, from SHK Bishop Baker School, and his teammates returned home yesterday.
It was fourth-time lucky for Hok-pun, who said his win was 'long anticipated' because he had been expecting a prize in last year's competition.
His mother, To Siu-ping, said her son's success was a 'combination of gifted talent and hard work'.
