News that the Malaysian marque TD2000 Cars was exporting its TD2000 classic sports roadster (above) to Japan made Foot Down wonder whether the cars, retailing for M$198,500 (HK$754,300), were represented in Hong Kong. Within an hour, the efficient Malaysian Consulate trade desk put us in touch with the marque's managing director, Edward Teo, who said TD2000 Cars was looking at representation options in southern China. The SAR was an obvious market for his gleaming two-litre models, he said, but 'we understand that recently the Hong Kong authorities insist on EURO III emission standards with [On-Board Diagnostic System II] fitted on all vehicles imported'.

'Our engines and transmissions are from Toyota's domestic factory [which with slight adjustment meets EURO III standards] but do not come with OBD II. Hence, we are unable to export to Hong Kong.' However, Teo says, 'we are interested to find representation in Macau and South China. Can you help?' particularly as 'we also make a left-hand-drive model and this has been exported to Taiwan'. He says the future Macau importer should be a company that 'is already selling cars, in other words, a Nissan, Toyota or Mercedes dealer, and so on. Similarly, we would be interested to have a car dealer as our importer for Guangdong.'
