A total of 153 students achieved Grade A's in at least eight subjects in this year's HKCEE exams, with 15 of them achieving straight A's in 10 subjects.
Of the 122,098 candidates who sat this year's Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, 49,544, or 40.6 per cent, met the minimum entry requirement - a total of eight points or above in at least five subjects - for Form Six study. In practice, most above-average Form Six schools require 14 or more points for admission.
Under the rules, a student scores one point for a grade E and five points for a grade A. Forty per cent of candidates, or about 49,900, got eight points or above last year.
All candidates were due to receive their exam results today. About 55 per cent of candidates sat the exams for the first time.
Secretary of the Examinations and Assessment Authority Choi Chee-cheong said yesterday that candidates with poor results should think carefully before deciding whether to have a second attempt.
'Our analysis shows that of those students who scored seven points in 2000 HKCEE, just 9.5 per cent could get 14 points or above in their second attempt last year,' he said.
'Repeating Form Five is just one of the options. They should consider whether there are other options for further studies.'
