Some students who failed their exams were yesterday determined to repeat Secondary Five despite the examination authority's appeal for them to think twice about doing so.

An analysis of students' scores by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, showed that of the students who scored seven points in the 2000 HKCEE, just 9.5 per cent attained 14 points or above at their second attempt last year.

Cheung Yin-wai, 17, a Form Five graduate of Ma Ko Pan College in Tuen Mun, failed all his subjects this year but was considering repeating Form Five at evening school. He said he had identified the reasons he had failed and was confident he would succeed next time round.

'I would like to gain a place at university and specialise in electronic engineering one day,' he said.

Ah Wai, 19, who repeated his exams at Lui Cheung Kwong Lutheran College in Tuen Mun, said pupils should not be discouraged.

He scored 12 points in the exam last year but managed to attain 19 points this year. 'I was determined to improve and gain a Form Six place,' he said, saying that his failure last year provided the impetus for his success this year.
