Revamped bazaar makes waves
The Quayside Bazaar on Sheung Wan's waterfront is to be revived next month after lying dormant for 10 years. The focus of the complex, however, will no longer be just dining and shopping, with regular art performances and themed festival events planned.
A popular night-time hangout since the 1960s, the modernised bazaar now covers 68,000 sq ft and has been renamed Sheung Wan Gala Point.
Supermedia Exhibition senior project manager, Eric Wong See-chung, says his firm hopes the new design rekindles locals' memories.
There will be 293 stalls selling things like clothes, gadgets and accessories. Another 30 stalls near the waterfront are dedicated to Hong Kong-style dining.
Performances will be more diversified than before and cover more than singing and dancing. Chinese dramas, acrobatics, and storytelling will regularly take place. Special events will be held on major festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Halloween and Christmas.
In June, Supermedia Exhibition won the right to run the Quayside Bazaar but did not start building until this month when the government released the land. The company will invest $20 million in the project. Interested parties are welcome to discuss leasing stalls from as little as $500 per month. 'We hope the re-opening of the bazaar can help boost the economy,' Wong says.
