A night-shift worker at a home for the elderly accused of strangling a patient was probably the only person in the dormitory strong enough to commit the crime, a court heard yesterday.

Wah Chun-wing, 59, pleaded not guilty in the Court of First Instance to murdering Chiu Yiu-hing, 79, at the Home of the Elderly in Man Yuen Street, Kowloon, on June 18 last year.

Prosecutor Thomas Iu said the owner of the home had received a phone call from Wah just before 4am to say Chiu was 'critical' in the toilet. The owner told Wah to move Chiu to her own bed before calling the police, but the old lady was dead when they arrived.

A post mortem examination found she had been strangled.

Mr Iu said the nine patients under Wah's care were so physically weak they were not capable of throttling the dead woman.

The trial continues before Mrs Justice Verina Bokhary on Monday.
