Cyberport is broadening its search for tenants to China, hoping to attract mainland information technology (IT) companies to set up operations in Hong Kong.
The Pokfulam joint venture project between the government and PCCW is looking north to fill vacancies at a time when many overseas technology firms are delaying expansion plans amid poor market sentiment and economic downturn.
The change in tenant focus is also due to China being one of the few global economies reporting strong growth, with domestic companies becoming more aggressive about overseas expansion.
The government says it has leased 80 per cent of about 448,000 square feet of office space in the first phase of the Cyberport project, but it needs to find more tenants to fill the next 760,000 sq ft.
Cyberport co-ordinator Annie Tam Kam-lan said it had been seeking mainland and international companies with the aim of broadening its tenant profile.
'Our aim is to form clusters not just for a certain group of companies or personalities,' Ms Tam said.
