I refer to the letter by Tony Miller, of Chelmsford, in the UK, headlined 'Rude shopkeepers' (South China Morning Post, August 13).
I feel ashamed to agree, entirely, with Mr Miller that shopping in the SAR is definitely not a pleasant experience, even for local residents. Sales people lack initiative, sincerity and smiles, which can be fatal to our tourism industry. Shoppers are likely to lose their eagerness to browse, not to mention to buy, once they enter a shop.
Eating in Hong Kong can be an equally unpleasant experience in some long-established Chinese restaurants. I wonder why customers are treated so badly given the rising unemployment rate.
I was given a cool reception when I asked for menus for banquets in an old Chinese restaurant in Yuen Long which is famous for mooncakes and sausages.
I felt I was cheated when I was presented with the bill at a famous restaurant in Mongkok. It was full of unreasonable charges.
I was so disappointed that I decided never again to bring any friends or relatives from overseas to that establishment.
