TCL group, China's No 1 television and mobile phone handset manufacturer, has announced an exclusive agreement with Philips to distribute the European company's televisions in five provinces.

The announcement came a day after Hong Kong-listed TCL International Holdings posted a 57 per cent rise in interim net profit to HK$253 million.

The agreement will see TCL distribute Philips televisions in Guangxi, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Anhui and Shanxi provinces.

According to the Ministry of Information Industry, Philips produced 400,000 televisions in China in the first half, of which 230,000 were for export.

Philips, which has its production base in Suzhou, had less than 1 per cent of the mainland market while TCL controlled 20 per cent.

TCL's 27 branches and 174 sales points will help Philips reach different provinces.

In the first half, TCL produced 3.5 million televisions and expects to achieve seven million units for the year.

Alan Spark, senior vice-president of Philips Consumer Electronics for Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, said: 'Philips continues to research and develop the latest digital technology to maintain our leading position in the world arena.

'To continue our active promotion strategies in high-end products in the mainland market, we are prioritising our resources in the first-tier market.

'On the other hand, we will try another operation model, which is based on the distribution co-operation with TCL group, to maintain our regional market share.'

TCL group director and president Tomson Li Dongsheng said the company would use its competitive edge to co-operate with Philips and provide a range of products and services.

'Co-operating with multinational firms provides synergies and integrates our resources, creating a win-win situation,' Mr Li said.
