Hong Kong Junior Squash Open champion Dick Lau Siu-wai stepped up a level to compete in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open yesterday - a top senior event in the world squash calendar.

The event, which started at the Hong Kong Squash Centre yesterday, sees the world's top men's players, including number one Peter Nicol and Asian champion Ong Beng Hee, fight for a first prize of $136,500.

The draw for yesterday's opening qualifying matches wasn't made until just before the tournament started - so on Friday, Lau was unable to comment on the competition. But the 16-year-old did say he hoped to learn something from the event.

'I haven't set myself any goals for the Open, but I do want to pick up experience in competing at a top senior competition,' he said.

The teenager became a full-time athlete after taking his HKCEE this summer and will be able to take part in senior events more regularly from now on.

He recently returned from Australia, where he received a month's training under former world champion Rodney Martin.
