Hewlett-Packard yesterday unveiled a revamped notebook personal computer line that retains the Compaq brand name and standardises wireless network connection for consumers and enterprise users.
Benny Wong, product marketing manager for HP Hong Kong's personal systems group, said the new Compaq Evo and Presario families of portable PCs are fully equipped to support a variety of wireless connectivity technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless local area network (LAN), also known as Wi-Fi.
Under the revised product strategy for HP after it acquired Compaq Computer more than four months ago, Compaq's Presario brand will remain the consumer notebook line while HP's OmniBook line will be folded into the Evo notebook family for enterprise users over the next several months.
'Other notebook vendors have so far featured wireless connectivity in selected models, but HP has made this available in its whole notebook line,' he said.
MultiPort lets users access the Internet or their enterprise network without cables.
Its interface is located at the back of the notebook display panel. Multiport is available in either an 802.11b or Bluetooth module.
HP's new notebook product release follows earlier offerings made by competitors such as Fujitsu, NEC and IBM that feature wireless network capabilities.
