Big guns to battle it out in squash open

The big guns start their bid for a share of the US$100,000 (HK$779,000) total prize money in the first round of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open squash tournament which starts at 5 pm today.

Tonight's action at the Hong Kong Squash Centre sees the United Kingdom's world number one Peter Nicol take on Egypt's Omar Elborolossy, while Canadian ace and Commonwealth champion Jonathon Power (world number two) plays England's Paul Johnson.

All eight Hong Kong representatives crashed out of the competition in the opening qualifying matches on Sunday.

Local junior champion Dick Lau Siu-wai lost to England's Nick Taylor in three sets.

'I thought I played well, but his standard was very high,' said Siu-wai. 'Nick is fast, fit and strong. I learned a lot from him, especially about how he uses his speed.'
