Hong Kong users of Handspring's Treo Communicator are being warned not to download unofficial patches that upgrade their devices to use high-speed data services.

Handspring officials said stolen pre-release software to upgrade the Treo to use general packet radio service (GPRS) was circulating on the Web.

Rumours of its availability excited hand-held enthusiasts worldwide, sending hundreds to local Web sites in search of the download.

Handspring last night warned SAR users not to install the upgrade as the software was intended only for services in Singapore and New Zealand.

'We cannot guarantee your experience, nor will we support it if you choose to use a version of the upgrade that has not been released in your market with your mobile operator,' it said.

The company said the GPRS patch could be made available in Hong Kong by the end of the year. An official said it had spoken with a number of telecommunications operators on how to provide the next-generation service. 'We have been talking with local operators which offer GPRS. We aim to finish the testing and roll out the service this year.'
