SYNOPTICS Communications has signed an agreement with Network Peripherals to develop network adapter cards for high-bandwitdth asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. Network Peripherals will develop and manufacturer adaptors for EISA, Micro-channel and SBus architectures based on ATM technology from SynOptics combined with its own high-performance adaptor and software technology. The first product, a SBus ATM adaptor, is scheduled for delivery in January, with EISA-and Mirco-channel-based adaptors due in the second quarter of next year. ATM is a switched, local and wide network technology that allows, theoretically, an unlimited number of users to establish dedicated, high-speed connections with each other and high-performance servers.
