Film producer and director Cheung Kin-ting said yesterday he would not bow to pressure by triads who allegedly splattered paint across his new cafe in Happy Valley in an apparent attempt to extort protection money. Staff at his Cousin Cousin Cafe in King Kwong Street, which opened on Monday, called in police yesterday after finding red and yellow paint daubed across the signboard and shutter at 7am. Mr Cheung said that when the shop was being decorated last month, a man left a note demanding money. No report was made to police at the time. Mr Cheung said it was not known whether the latest incident was linked to the demand for a protection fee. Describing yesterday's act as cowardly, he said: 'Shop owners should not pay money to triads and we should join together to fight against such types of crime.' He voiced fears that law and order might deteriorate due to the poor economy but said he had confidence in the police. Detectives from Wan Chai police station are investigating the incident.
